Types of LED Downlights and How to Choose the Best Ones
LED Downlights are one of the most popular products we offer as they are used in a wide range of projects ranging from residential to commercial. LED Downlights can powerfully illuminate a room and upgrade its ambiance. They give a hidden look compared to other lighting since they are often recessed in the ceiling. In fact, our LED downlights offer the unique ability to cast light that seems as if it’s coming directly from the ceiling. As a result, using downlights helps optimize your lighting design, adding sleekness, modernity, and saving space.
TYPES OF LED DOWNLIGHTS
RECESSED – These are placed in the ceiling for a seamless look, and are typically used to provide general illumination.
– FIXED – Beam that is directed downward.
– ADJUSTABLE (GIMBAL) – Revolutionary design that can be titled 350 degrees, casting light in multiple directions.
SURFACE MOUNTED – If you cannot use recessed lighting (if you have a concrete ceiling, for example) or want a more customized design, surface mounted downlights are versatile in placement, commonly used to cast light a bit below the ceiling or on walls.
– FIXED – Just like recessed fixed downlights, these lights direct light downward.
– ADJUSTABLE (GIMBAL) – Just like the Recessed Adjustable LED downlights, these have our latest innovative adjustability feature that allows lighting to be projected to up to 350 degrees.
HOW MANY DOWNLIGHTS DO YOU NEED?
When choosing downlights, you should keep in mind what the goal of the space is, as that will help determine the style of downlight you will need. Downlights are a versatile, space saving, and an easy to install lighting option that can be used as ambient lighting or to provide focus.
To determine the amount of downlights you will need, simply take the area of the ceiling (in square feet) and multiply it by 1.5. Now that you have the total wattage that you will need to light the space, you can take this number and divide it by the wattage of the light you plan to use. This number will give you the amount of fixtures that you will need.
In terms of spacing, make sure you are evenly distributing the downlights to avoid shadows. When considering the ceiling height, you do not necessarily need to add more downlights when working with a taller ceiling. Instead, increase the wattage of every light you will use.
DOWNLIGHTS VS. SPOTLIGHTS
It is important to understand how downlights and spotlights differ from each other. Downlights can be used as spotlights (or focus lighting), as they offer a wide range of illumination capabilities, and can be either. However, the main difference is that downlights have the ability to both generally cast light or draw focus, while spotlights can only be used to highlight objects or elements. In many cases, LED Downlights are preferred because they do not provide a glare and are thus called “spotless” when compared to spotlights.
BENEFITS OF DOWNLIGHTS
LED Downlights are not only sleek looking, but also functional by design. They are also more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, and thus better for the environment. In addition, with their low voltage, LED downlights provide higher safety standards compared to halogen. In all, LED downlights save you money, have a longer life, are better for the environment, and are a safer option especially with VONN’s rigorous safety standards.
